Joliet Girl (North Star Press of St. Cloud, 2010) is a poet’s memoir about growing up in Joliet, Illinois, an aging steel town, in the late sixties and early seventies. I wrote this book with a lot of love and not a little sadness. My memoir deals frankly with difficult subjects such as my sexual anxieties as an adolescent and my coming to terms with a sister suffering from mental illness. I also take a very hard look, in the second section, at how six sisters who were close when they were growing up lose that special bond as they grow older.
