This essay is from Joliet in My Blood and was also in Shadow Town. It's painful subject matter but also a tribute to a beautiful human being.

 
I knew the smallest lie would cheapen this essay, which concerns an adolescent's anxieties about sex. Although sometimes difficult to write, I am gratified when readers tell me how close "The Summer . . ."
is to their own experience. This essay appeared in Volume 7 of the online journal Toasted-Cheese and is part of my memoir, Joliet Girl.
